Should my speaker cables be away from the floor?

Cables are affected by moisture and metal. So if there is a lot of metal – like a lot of re-enforcing steel in a concrete slab – lift the cable up off the floor. Also, if you have moisture in carpets, lift the cable off the floor. Moisture will cause accelerated corrosion of the cable and therefore shorting out the signal. Metal will cause distortion, if there is a lot – lift the cable if you are concerned. But the short answer, I would look at many other areas to improve my audio before thinking of lifting the cables – unless you have moisture.

What is a Monster cable?

A Monster cable is a make of audio and video cable that meets the highest quality standards, and includes Turbine connectors, 24 karat gold contacts, color coded bands, direction indicators, 75 ohm impedance and high grade copper. No wonder the cables make the equipment sound and look better.

What is a component cable?

Component video cables have three separate cables, connecting via the component RCA connectors on each side, that carry each of the primary color elements Y, Cr and Cr. This obviously has the advantage over the single cable in composite video, as in component, each color element has the full bandwidth of the independent cables.

Can cables be run outside?

Cables can be run outside, but ensure that you buy cables that are dedicated for outdoor use – which can “weather” the storm as it were. These obviously have protection against the elements. Make sure you stay within the distance parameters. Note also that cables that run inside a wall also need special types of cable.

Is it possible to connect my laptop to my TV?

Yes it is possible. Check to see whether you have a S-Video or Composite out connector on your laptop. Normally at the back of the laptop. Then check to make sure you have the corresponding connector on the TV – otherwise you will need a converter cable. You will need to adjust the video settings on the desktop on the PC to select the TV as the primary or secondary video display. The composite connection would go into the “AV Video in”, the S-Video would be the S-Video port on the TV.
